Women's Ministry

Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML)

LWML is the official service & mission organization of women of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and was organized in 1942 in Chicago. For over 65 years, the LWML has focused on affirming each woman's relationship with Christ, encouraging and equipping women to live out their Christian lives in active mission ministries and to support global missions.

Every woman who is a member of an LCMS congregation is automatically a member of LWML. The national LWML is divided into 40 districts, the districts then divide into regional zones with women forming individual societies in their congregations. The LWML of Our Savior Lutheran Church is a part of the LWML Suffolk Zone in the Atlantic District.
One of the ways we support missions is through Mission Grants. Every 2 years a national convention is held (district conventions are held on the off years) where women gather to pray and choose the mission projects that they will fund and support during the following biennium. These mission projects are funded through contributions, thank-offerings and the "Mites for Missions" program which is based on the story of the Widow's Mite from Luke 21:1-4. We collect our small offerings in "mite boxes" which we bring to church on the first Sunday of each month and deposit them in a large mite box located by the main entrance of the church. The mites are sent to the LWML Atlantic District (the District retains 75% and sends 25% to the National LWML to fund the national mission grants). These "mites" remind us of the widow who gave the small offering in the temple and how Jesus pointed out her giving as an example, because she gave all that she had. Through small offerings, great & mighty things can be accomplished for Jesus. LWML women raise approximately $4 million for direct mission funding every two years.

As part of the Suffolk Zone & Atlantic District, we have the opportunity of attending 2 annual retreats: The Suffolk Zone retreat held in the spring at Cor Marie Retreat House in Sag Harbor, and the District retreat held in October at Tuscarora Inn in Mt. Bethel, PA. We have shared special times worshipping God, praying together, studying His Word, and just enjoying the beauty of the world He created.
